With a cup of coffee in hand, Work Preparation Specialist Martijn takes us through a day at Sidcon. Since 2023, he’s been responsible for preparing the production of underground compactors and is also actively involved in making the company more sustainable.
“I get up as late as possible. The night before, I prepare my lunch so that in the morning I only have to shower, grab my things, and jump on my bike to work. Once I arrive, coffee is my first priority, very important! I check if any colleagues want a cup too, and then I look at the agenda to see what’s planned for the day.”
“Usually, I start with a handover from Sales. I receive the customer specifications and together we determine which type of underground compactor needs to be built. Using a parts list, I assemble the compactor and figure out which components are required. On a daily basis, I manage material purchasing and work closely with the production team. Sometimes measurements are off or there’s an issue with parts. When that happens, I walk over to the workshop to see what’s going on. If possible, we solve it ourselves. Otherwise, we return the part to the supplier.”
“My favorite part of the day? Working with the production team. Walking into the workshop, having a quick chat, and solving problems together.”
“The work is very customer-specific. If it’s a compactor for Amsterdam, it’s usually pretty straightforward. The main variation is whether you’re building a paper and cardboard, plastic packaging, or residual waste compactor.”
“In addition to my role as a Work Preparation Specialist, I’m also the QHSE coordinator. Together with directors Reinier and Boris, I explore ways to make Sidcon more sustainable. At the moment, we’re investigating how we can reuse or replace certain parts.”
“My favorite part of the day? Collaborating with the production team. Heading into the workshop, chatting for a bit, and solving issues together. That gives me real satisfaction, especially once the problem is fixed and I can cross it off my list. I also enjoy working out the full specifications of a compactor and ordering the necessary parts. When I manage to tick off a lot of tasks in a single day, that just feels great.”
“At the end of the day, I send out an update. I keep an Excel sheet up to date and share it with the team. That way, Sales knows which compactors are ready and Production stays informed of the current status.”
