How the underground compactor helps sustainability.

Sidcon aims to play its part in bringing about a cleaner world by maximising the sustainability of its waste collection and processing activities. In order to achieve this, we are developing innovative means of collection which optimise efficiency. In addition, we manufacture as sustainably as possible. For example, since 2021, Sidcon has been affiliated with the carbon reductions ladder and we are actively engaged in the introduction of a carbon reductions programm.

Waste collection with fewer carbon emissions

The underground compactor and Presstation Bin are both containers with an underground compaction mechanism. The increased waste capacity means they don’t need to be emptied as frequently. Because fewer refuse collection vehicles are required, this results in lower emissions of airborne particles and CO2.

The increased capacity also means that fewer containers are needed in public spaces. Fewer containers means less impact on (public) spaces. All told, this leads to a significant decrease in carbon emissions per kilo of waste collected.

Longer lifespan of the underground compactor

Since 2008, Sidcon has been designing and building underground compactors in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Of the very first designs, installed in 2008, half are still in active use, 15 years later. This is an indication of exactly how robustly designed and built they are. Over the years, many improvements have been introduced: for new containers therefore, we now give a 5-year warranty. The average lifespan of the current generation of underground compactors is between 12 and 15 years. Since 2023, it has been possible to refurbish older underground compactors. This extends the lifespan, once again reducing the carbon footprint.

''Fewer waste collections are needed and this means that there are fewer transport movements in the city too. As a result, the municipality is working to attain its climate target: a clean city with fewer particulates and carbon emissions.''
