Underground compactors in a new residential area

Space shortage

Ingolstadt is one of many German cities where the development of housing is a top priority. Due to the favorable labor market situation and the influx of students from the technical university, housing is becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. To tackle the housing shortage, the city is focusing on three measures: new construction, repurposing former industrial sites, and increasing the density of existing residential areas.

Given the limited space and rising land prices, land must be used as efficiently and economically as possible. This also applies to the use of space for waste containers.

Saving space with the compactor

Less traffic in the city

Another challenge is traffic congestion. Where and how can traffic volume be reduced in general? And what options are available in the area of waste management? Can collection be organized more efficiently? In particular for cardboard and light packaging, where large volumes but relatively little weight are collected and transported? Ingolstadt has taken up the challenge and set out to find sustainable solutions.

In 2020, a pilot project was launched at 2 locations in a newly developed residential complex. Instead of conventional underground systems, Sidcon’s underground compactors were installed on a trial basis. The results speak for themselves: even before the end of the test phase, 2 more compactors were ordered, installed, and successfully put into operation.
